| Description: | In collaboration with various department staff, the assistant director will be responsible for assisting in the development and analysis of education policies and practices, particularly in relation to the Common Core State Standards, and for supporting their implementation on the ground. Under the general supervision of the assistant to the president for educational issues, the assistant director will report to a deputy director and assist in explaining and adapting programs and providing training that will help local and state affiliates implement the AFT's Quality Education Agenda to improve public education and to demonstrate the union's leadership role in educational improvement. Unit: AFTSU Job Number: AOF-39-27-0812-V Supervisor: Assistant to the President for Educational Issues Department: Educational Issues Salary: $94,712.24/annually Position Responsibilities: -Maintain and continue to expand the standards, curriculum and assessments expert teacher team. -Lead effort to promote meaningful teacher involvement in national, state and local efforts on standards, curriculum, and assessment -Develop and maintain purposeful partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders -Help develop the AFT's as well as local and state affiliates' capacity on issues dealing with standards, curriculum and assessments -Write, produce and/or assist in the production of a variety of written materials, including written statements, training materials, issue summaries and talking points related to various aspects of educational standards, curriculum and assessments. -Respond to affiliate requests for information and support in developing programs and responses to various state and local education initiatives. -Monitor related issues and prepare and deliver presentations to policymakers, affiliates and other groups regarding AFT's policy and programs on standards, assessments and curriculum. -Represent AFT at various education policy-related events. -Produce and distribute both internally and externally summaries of key education policy-related reports. -Provide support to other initiatives supported by the educational issues department and to relevant interdepartmental efforts. -Other duties as assigned. -Some travel required. Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Proven research, writing and analytical skills. -Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the issues facing public education, including a strong background with standards based reform. -Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with others to develop and implement programs and to make presentations on AFT's positions on various issues. -Degree in a related field or relevant experience. Secondary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Knowledge or experience with AFT, state and local affiliate policy and structure is highly desirable. -Strong organizational skills also desirable.
