Summary: The Director of Communications and Marketing for Compassion & Choices raises awareness of and builds a base of supporters for priorities within the strategic plan. The director will lead the development and implementation of an integrated communications strategy and budget, working in concert with policy/advocacy staff, field, client support and organizational leadership. Reporting directly to the Chief Program Officer, the Director will also provide counsel on overall strategic direction of Compassion & Choices programming as well as national communications issues. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Develop and oversee implementation of an integrated communications, branding and marketing plan and budget that achieves Compassion & Choices strategic priorities. Balance and manage the needs of internal and external constituencies and audiences. Represent communications, branding and marketing functions on Program Department Directors team. Oversee or directly provide communications support for media advocacy/relations, field, client services, policy advocacy and fund-raising efforts. Support campaigns, affiliates, chapters, and local groups within Compassion & Choices to enhance local communications capacity and align them with national strategic goals and programs. Develop and implement branding, marketing, and product opportunities that position Compassion & Choices as the leader for advance planning and end-of-life choice. Implement style and content norms that appeal to for national audiences and increase the donor/membership base and financial support. Lead the communications and marketing team to execute a wide range of tactics including media advocacy/outreach, development and distribution of print collateral, web and electronic communications, social media, social marketing campaigns, branding/marketing campaigns and product merchandizing. Personally execute communications and marketing tactics as necessary. Set and maintain standards for a highly articulate and compelling Compassion & Choices voice that dominates all written copy. Write and/or edit content for print and online collateral to ensure excellence in content, style, syntax, vocabulary and grammar. The style and accuracy of copy is the responsibility of the Director of Communications and Marketing. Ensure the delivery of products and services in a manner that best meets the needs and expectation of constituents in print (magazines, annual report, reports, brochures) and electronically including web platform, electronic constituent relationship management, and other e-communications systems. Develop organizational, program and campaign messaging, target audiences and spokespeople. Coordinate public opinion research efforts to refine targeting, messaging, messengers, and other elements of strategy. Ensure implementation and compliance of branding and messaging guidelines that unify Compassion & Choices work and coordinate its communication activities throughout the nation. Serve as a public spokesperson as necessary and a key liaison with partner organizations on communications matters involving end-of-life care and choice. Ensure the accurate and appropriate representation of the Compassion & Choices brand in all materials and activities. Supervisory Responsibilities: Leads a five person team and directly supervise the Media Relations Manager, Online Community Builder, Communications Coordinator, and Communications Design Coordinator. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Education and Experience: Bachelor?s degree in Communication, Marketing or related program required with an advanced degree preferred. Seven or more years of direct experience in communications, pubic relations and/or marketing with a demonstrated record of success working with national and state-based advocacy issues and audiences. Five or more years of demonstrated success in leading and managing a team and creating and implementing communications and marketing strategies. Three to five years demonstrated success speaking to live audiences and with print and video media. Proven writing and editing skills. Must write well quickly and under pressure. Operational knowledge of Community Advocacy/Customer Relations, Internet/Website, Media, Spreadsheet and Word Processing software. Location: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be based in a Compassion & Choices office in Washington DC, New York, NY or Portland, OR. The Communication?s department serves staff and volunteers in 13 locations from Hawaii to Massachusetts.
