Description: The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women interested in an exciting and challenging career in law enforcement. Prior law enforcement experience is not required. The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the most professional, progressive agencies in the United States. In addition to operating the most innovative detention facilities in the country, the Office of the Sheriff provides patrol services throughout the county including four contract cities for which it provides total police services. Many other specialized assignments are also available. As a department of over 1,000 employees, with 668 that are sworn, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff continues to grow and progress, providing excellent opportunities in career development for its deputies.

When attending the academy, recruits will receive approximately $3,451. per month. Additional incentives for P.O.S.T. certificates up to 5%, $800. per year for uniform allowance, $65 bilingual pay for selected assignments. Deputy Sheriffs enjoy 13 paid holidays per year and accrue vacation at two weeks for the first 5 years and up depending on length of service.
Shift variety: Deputy Sheriffs work a wide variety of shifts and hours depending on assignment to include 3 and 4 work day schedules.
Insurance options include medical, dental and life insurance for employees and their dependents. Deputy Sheriffs are members of the Safety Service Retirement established under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937

Minimum Qualifications

License: Possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator?s License.
Education: Possess a high school diploma, GED equivalency or high school proficiency certificate that meets P.O.S.T. standards.
Age: Must be 21 at time of appointment.
Citizenship: Be a United States Citizen.
Physical: Ability to meet such health standards established by the County Medical Consultant.
Vision: 20/200 each eye if wearing soft contact lenses; corrected to 20/30 each eye. Persons undergoing Radial Keratotomy or similar surgery are not eligible until six months after surgery if 35 years of age or younger, one year if over 35 years old.
Hearing: Must not have suffered a hearing loss of over 25 decibels in the 500, 1000, and 2000 frequency ranges for each ear.
