Pre-Service Riverside County Sheriff's Department defines Pre-Service as an individual who has received a California Basic POST certification but has not yet held a position in law enforcement or has not completed probation with a law enforcement agency. Qualified pre-service candidates are not required to take the Physical Agility Test (PAT) with the Department, but must successfully complete our online pre-screen questionnaire and pass the written examination at the Deputy Sheriff level. Lateral Riverside County Sheriff's Department defines Lateral as an individual who has obtained a California POST certification, has a minimum of one year experience with a law enforcement agency, successfully completing probation, and is currently working in a sworn position. Qualified lateral candidates are not required to take the written examination and Physical Agility Test (PAT), but must successfully complete our online pre-screen questionnaire. Please Note: California POST certifications are only valid for 3 years after the date of graduation or 3 years after date of termination of a sworn position with any law enforcement agency, whichever is later of the two. Candidates without a valid P.O.S.T. certification will not be processed as pre-service or lateral. Out of State Candidates that have obtained a POST certification outside of the state of California are encouraged to contact California POST and "Challenge POST". Should qualifications and standards be honored by California POST, a POST Wavier will be issued and the Department will accept that has valid certification.
