Job Title: DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF GIFT PLANNING [DEVF-32] NY

The Development Department of the National office in New York City is seeking applicants for a full-time Deputy Director of Gift Planning.

OVERVIEW

The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty. Combining litigation with public education, media outreach, advocacy, and lobbying, the ACLU works at the local, state, and federal levels to effect change in the courts and legislatures, as well as in the court of public opinion. The ACLU tackles a vast array of issues, including national security and human rights, free speech, reproductive freedom, women?s rights, separation of church and state, racial justice, equality for LGBT people, voting rights, immigrants? rights, criminal justice reform, and ending the death penalty. The ACLU has participated in more cases at the U.S. Supreme Court than any other nongovernmental organization. Effective and efficient, The ACLU is in the 1 percent of charities receiving at least 9 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator.

The national office of the ACLU has approximately 300 employees. Including affiliates, the organization has more than 1,000 employees. The national Development Department raises approximately $70 million annually in private support from major donors, foundations, and more than 500,000 members.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As one of the leaders of a large and sophisticated Gift Planning program, and reporting to the Director of Gift Planning, the Deputy Director of Gift Planning will share responsibility for managing a team of professionals focused on the organization?s future revenue growth. The Deputy Director:

Holds overall responsibility for leading a team of Associate Directors in personally soliciting planned gifts, and the cultivation and stewardship of planned gift donors, with a focus on the highest capacity prospects.
Manages a personal portfolio of donors and prospects, with the expectation that there will be face-to-face donor visits within assigned states.
Provides strategic guidance and ongoing supervision to Associate Directors.
Oversees the interaction of philanthropy officers with affiliate offices, including advising on individual donor strategies, offering strategic advice on the direction of fundraising programs, and providing more intensive consulting on affiliate campaigns.
Collaborates directly with selected affiliates to help realize their full fundraising potential.
Directs and manages the infrastructure for gift proposals, solicitation collateral, and ongoing donor cultivations.
Manages donor data and management reporting, and supervises other back office functions as needed.
Directs and supervises gift planning support staff.
Supports senior staff and volunteers as needed, with donor cultivation and solicitation in assigned states.
Solicits prospects for planned and outright gifts by collaborating with affiliate staff, the Leadership Gifts unit, colleagues in other Development units, and colleagues in the Legal, Legislative, and Advocacy departments as needed.
Assists the Director of Gift Planning in overall strategy for growing revenue in this program.
Undertakes special projects under the direction of the Director of Gift Planning.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor?s degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience required.
A proven track record in all aspects of planned gifts fundraising in a sophisticated institution or organization with a reputation for quality and excellence including extensive planned gifts expertise or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A successful track record of identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors for planned gifts.
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, mentor and inspire staff.
Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working with donors, volunteers, senior staff, and our affiliates.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills; highly skilled in writing and speaking; adept at crafting donor correspondence, proposals and other kinds of communications.
Excellent computer skills including experience with donor database management and systems to administer a planned giving program.
Superb organizational skills; detail oriented with strong follow-through and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
The ability to accomplish financial and other goals with affiliates while not directly supervising the staff. Strong collaborative, team-building skills essential.
Excellent planning, prioritizing, organizational and follow through skills.
Ability to think strategically.
Experience in a national organization preferred.
Ability to represent the organization in a variety of settings.
Willingness to undertake significant travel.
Commitment to the mission of the ACLU.
