| Description: | Summary: Monitor choice-related policy issues at the federal and state levels. Perform preliminary policy analysis and research on choice-related proposals, draft a variety of advocacy materials, and contribute to significant policy publications. Help provide policy support to state affiliates and, as assigned, represent NARAL Pro-Choice America's views in Congress and with progressive allies. Policy Associate Responsibilities: - Within assigned issue areas, track all relevant choice-related activity on Capitol Hill and in state legislatures. Report developments to policy representatives and other key staff as appropriate. Perform preliminary policy analysis on state and federal legislation. - Working as a team with policy representatives, in assigned issue areas, assist state affiliates on key choice-related proposals with preliminary policy analysis and strategy recommendations. - Working as a team with policy representatives, in assigned issue areas, serves as one of the organization?s junior lobbyists on Capitol Hill. Attend hearings, mark-ups, and track votes. Make lobbying phone calls. - Contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice America documents and publications such as Who Decides? Policy Updates, and the Congressional Record on Choice. - In assigned issue areas, assist in preparation of fact sheets, talking points, model legislation, letters to policymakers, staff memos, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents. Draft updates to these items as developments in issue areas occur. - Assist in tracking reproductive-rights-related cases nationwide. - With policy representatives, as assigned, represent NARAL Pro-Choice America to progressive partners and coalitions. - Maintain files on reproductive-health issues, including monitoring relevant publications and literature. - Perform first-round edits on copy from other departments. - Liaise with other departments or internal work groups - such as the Diversity Team - as assigned. - Other duties as assigned. Qualifications - Four-year college degree. - Minimum two years professional experience, preferably in a related field or relevant advanced degree may be substituted for some of the work experience. - Experience in research and/or policy analysis preferred. - Strong written and oral communication skills. - Strong organizational skills, ability to work as a team with senior colleagues, and ability to meet deadlines consistently with minimal supervision. - Attention to detail and accuracy. - Professional, polished, diplomatic, and mature demeanor. - Knowledge of MS Word, Access, Excel and other programs highly desirable. - Knowledge of reproductive-health issues preferred. - Commitment to diversity and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences. - Clear understanding of, and commitment to, NARAL Pro-Choice America?s mission and goals. Policy Aide Responsibilities: Within assigned issue areas (in some cases working solely; in others, working as a team with a junior or senior colleague): - Track all relevant choice-related activity on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, and in state legislatures. Report developments to the director and other key staff as appropriate. Perform policy analysis on state and federal legislation, and, as assigned, advocate NARAL Pro-Choice America?s views. - Under the director?s supervision, with issue teammates, craft and carry out legislative strategy. - Represent NARAL Pro-Choice America?s policy views on Capitol Hill. As assigned, lobby and brief congressional staff through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls. Work mark-ups, hearings, and votes. - Assist state affiliates on key choice-related proposals with preliminary policy analysis and strategy recommendations. - Write, edit, and update fact sheets, talking points, letters to policymakers, staff memos, model legislation, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents. - Coordinate policy strategy and activities across NARAL Pro-Choice America as a whole to maximize benefits to the pro-choice movement and NARAL Pro-Choice America in particular. - As assigned, represent NARAL Pro-Choice America to progressive partners and coalitions. - Contribute to internal documents and publications such as Policy Updates, Who Decides? and the Congressional Record on Choice. Edit copy from other departments. - Liaise with other departments or internal work groups as assigned. - Other duties as assigned.
