The Development Department of the National office in New York City is seeking a full-time Deputy Director of Leadership Gifts. OVERVIEW The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty. Combining litigation with public education, media outreach, advocacy, and lobbying, the ACLU works at the local, state, and federal levels to effect change in the courts and legislatures, as well as in the court of public opinion. The ACLU tackles a vast array of issues, including national security and human rights, free speech, reproductive freedom, women's rights, separation of church and state, racial justice, equality for LGBT people, voting rights, immigrants' rights, criminal justice reform, and ending the death penalty. The ACLU has participated in more cases at the U.S. Supreme Court than any other nongovernmental organization. Effective and efficient, the ACLU is in the 1 percent of charities receiving at least 9 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator. The national office of the ACLU has approximately 300 employees. Including affiliates, the organization has approximately 1,000 employees. The national Development Department raises approximately $70 million annually in private support from major donors, foundations, and more than 500,000 members. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Deputy Director of Leadership Gifts is a key leader in a sophisticated, aggressive, rapidly growing Leadership Gifts program that focuses on donors capable of giving $25,000+. Working closely with the Director of Leadership Gifts, the Deputy Director will provide strategic guidance to a team of Associate Directors of Leadership Gifts, oversee a high-level solicitation skills-building program, and help guide the direction of the Leadership Gifts program. Roles and responsibilities include the following: ? Partner with the Director of Leadership Gifts on crafting and enhancing the overall strategy for growing revenue in this program. ? Work with the Director to identify and make available the necessary resources to provide the optimal level of fundraising support for high- level ACLU solicitors across the country. ? Lead a team of Associate Directors in the personal solicitation, cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects capable of giving $25,000+ and securing upgrades over time. ? Oversee fundraising portfolios, strategies, and plans in conjunction with Associate Directors and affiliates. ? Guide and partner with Associate Directors in collaborating with ACLU program staff and affiliate staff. ? Manage a personal portfolio of donors and prospects, and participate in face-to-face donor visits and related activities. ? Devise and oversee implementation of an advanced solicitation skills-building program for national office and affiliate solicitors. ? Work with external vendors responsible for solicitation skills-building program. ? Set project timelines, review work product, and make adjustments as required. ? Produce a variety of reports, analyze results, and make recommendations related to strategies for growing program revenue. ? Create donor strategy memos, letters, emails, and other related pieces for donors, prospects, ACLU program staff, affiliate staff, and others. ? Undertake special projects under the direction of the Director of Leadership Gifts. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS ? Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. A proven track record in all aspects of leadership gifts fundraising in a sophisticated institution or program that has a reputation for excellence. ? Significant success identifying,cultivating, stewarding, soliciting, and closing gifts of $25,000 or more from prospects and donors. ? Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, mentor, coach, and inspire staff and colleagues. ? Self-starter with exceptional leadership skills, including strategic and analytical thinking. ? Excellent interpersonal skills and poise with donors, volunteers, senior staff, affiliate staff, and other colleagues. ? Strong collaboration and team-building skills. ? Excellent verbal and written communication skills. ? Excellent computer skills, including experience with donor database management and systems. ? Superb organizational skills, including planning, prioritizing, managing projects, following-through, meeting tight deadlines, and attending to details. ? Ability to successfully navigate and thrive in a complex organization. Experience in a national organization with an affiliate or chapter structure is desirable. ? Willingness and desire to travel periodically to solicit donors and engage affiliate and other colleagues. ? Commitment to and knowledge of ACLU programs and interests.
