Job Title: Advocacy and Policy Coordinator
Organization: ACLU
Region: East Coast
Description: (ASD-28/36)

For more than 92 years, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country's largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists, policy advocates and members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society.
The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department (ASA) of the ACLU's National Office in New York City seeks two full-time Advocacy and Policy Coordinators.

States are a major battleground in the fight for civil liberties. Each year, state policymakers across the country consider a wide variety of proposals that both assault and protect our most fundamental rights. The 2013 state legislative sessions, for example, have featured high-stakes debates on the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, abortion access, immigrants' rights, criminal justice reform, and privacy in the digital age, among many other critical civil liberties issues. Through its state affiliates, members, and national staff, the ACLU works in every state across the country to protect and advance civil liberties.
The ASA's Advocacy Team partners with ACLU affiliates to advance state-based advocacy in furtherance of the ACLU's public policy priorities, crafts coordinated state strategies to achieve nationwide change, and works with ACLU affiliates to build the infrastructure they need to effectively advance their policy goals. The ACLU's state-based work includes advocacy to advance criminal justice reform, disability rights, free speech, human rights, immigrants' rights, LGBT rights, prisoners' rights, racial justice, religious freedom, reproductive rights, technology and liberty, voting rights, and women's rights.

The Advocacy and Policy Coordinators will serve as integral members of the Advocacy Team by managing its day-to-day activities. In addition, the Coordinators will attend regular team meetings and will have the opportunity to learn about opportunities to advance and defend civil liberties through integrated advocacy.
