Job Title: Community Organizer

Description: Toxics Action Center, a New England-wide non-profit public health and environmental organization, seeks Community Organizers to be based in its Portland, ME, Hartford, CT and Boston or Amherst, MA offices.

For 25 years, Toxics Action Center has worked side by side with more than 700 communities to hold polluters accountable, galvanize government into action, and win real victories for public health and the environment while developing long-term leaders to broaden the environmental movement.

Whenever the health and environment of a community is threatened in New England, Toxics Action Center is there. As the 911 of the environmental movement, we help everyday folks be the change they want to see in the world.

The Community Organizer will join a strong and committed team to implement our core program of neighborhood assistance and organizing trainings. The Community Organizer will work closely with the Senior Community Organizer and Executive Director to give local grassroots groups the information, networking and organizing skills they need to win efforts to curb pesticide spraying, halt dirty incinerator proposals, close polluting power plants, clean up toxic sites, or promote clean energy and zero waste. Community Organizers serve as pro bono campaign consultants, mentors, and coaches to unlikely activists launching grassroots campaigns to protect their health and the environment.

Job Responsibilities

The Community Organizer will utilize Toxics Action Center's Neighborhood Assistance Program with community groups to help them develop and implement effective strategies to solve local toxic pollution problems.

Organizing assistance and trainings include but are not limited campaign planning; developing a message and campaign materials; group-building and recruitment; fundraising; working with the media; and getting out the vote.

Specifically the staff person will:
- Assist 10-15 community groups a year on their local campaigns.
- Conduct 25 organizing skills trainings and 50 leadership development trainings.
- Join team efforts to organize a 200-person grassroots environmental conference.
- Write grants and create other fundraising opportunities.
- Become an issue expert on a toxic pollution problem.
- Identify and cultivate donors to the organization.

Qualifications
- Previous organizing experience, management and fundraising experience a plus. Sense of humor, flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Desire to be part of a dynamic team.
- Articulate, detail-oriented, and able to tell a story. Strategic, personable, and able to work with a wide range of people.
