Description: About the Caucus
The Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators was formed in 1975 with the mission of advancing the economic status and equality of women and to encourage and support women in all levels of government.

The 2013 bi-cameral and bi-partisan Caucus of Women Legislators is comprised of 51 members of the House and the Senate; Representative Ruth B. Balser is the House Chair of the Caucus, and Senator Gale D. Candaras is the Senate Chair.

The Caucus has chosen to focus on the issue of pay equity for the 2013-2014 legislative session.

Internships are also available in the offices of Caucus members.

Internship Description
Among other responsibilities, interns will:
- Assist with the writing of the Caucus Newsletter;
- Compile and disseminate press clips to Caucus Members;
- Draft press releases, testimony, memos, policy briefs, for the Executive Director and/or Caucus Members;
- Work on creating a clearinghouse of materials and research related to the Caucus? mission and goals;
- Assist with all aspects of event and meeting planning;
- Respond to the needs and requests of Caucus Members and their staff;
- Interact with legislators, staff, lobbyists/advocates, and community organizations ;
- Research various policy and political issues;
- Prepare materials and talking points for events, meetings, press opportunities, etc;
- Take and prepare minutes and notes at meetings and events;
- Represent the Caucus at meetings and events when appropriate;
- Assist with archiving the Caucus? historical materials;
- Handle daily administrative tasks of running the office and assist with creating and maintaining organizational and operational systems.


Structure of the Internship
Interns report directly to the Executive Director.

The internship is based in the State House, Room 460.

While each interns? schedule will vary, interns must be available during traditional work hours (Monday through Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm) for a minimum of 12 hours a week for at least 3 months. Alternate internship schedules can be requested and will be considered by the Executive Director on a case-by-case basis.

Due to space constraints, interns may be asked to bring their personal laptops for use in the Caucus office.

The Caucus is unable to offer a stipend. However, if course credit is an option, the Caucus is happy to do what is necessary for interns to receive credit from their academic institution.
Interns are bound by the standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professional conduct set forth for State House employees.
A mandatory orientation and training will be required at the start of the internship.
Requirements
Applicants must have a passion for advancing the political and economic status of women. Experience with the legislative and political process in Massachusetts is desirable, but not necessary.

This is a high-level, substantive internship that requires exceptional writing, research, communication, and analytical/critical-thinking skills. The successful applicant will have outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills. Attention to detail and an all-hands-on-deck attitude is key!
Applicants must be independent, flexible, and highly self-reliant/motivated workers who thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
Applicants must be comfortable on the phone, enjoy collaborating with others, and be able to work effectively with people of all different backgrounds and political ideologies.
Applicants are expected to be professional in their behavior, demeanor, and appearance at all times; professional dress is required.
