The Development Department of the National office in New York City is seeking applicants for a full-time Associate Director of Special Gifts. OVERVIEW The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty. Combining litigation with public education, media outreach, advocacy, and lobbying, the ACLU works at the local, state, and federal levels to effect change in the courts and legislatures, as well as in the court of public opinion. The ACLU tackles a vast array of issues, including national security and human rights, free speech, reproductive freedom, women?s rights, separation of church and state, racial justice, equality for LGBT people, voting rights, immigrants? rights, criminal justice reform, and ending the death penalty. The ACLU has participated in more cases at the U.S. Supreme Court than any other nongovernmental organization. Effective and efficient, The ACLU is in the 1 percent of charities receiving at least 9 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator. The national office of the ACLU has approximately 300 employees. Including affiliates, the organization has more than 1,000 employees. The national Development Department raises approximately $70 million annually in private support from major donors, foundations, and more than 500,000 members. As a member of a sophisticated and growing Special Gifts program and reporting to the Director of Special Gifts, the Associate Director of Special Gifts will share responsibility for managing a team of professionals focused on developing and implementing direct marketing strategies targeted toward individual mid-level donors. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Create and implement direct marketing strategies (including but not limited to direct mail, telemarketing and e-fundraising) to meet and exceed solicitation and upgrade goals for individual mid-level ($250-$9,999) donors and to engage and secure intentions from gift planning prospects. -Lead the creation of appropriate direct marketing materials for a select group of $5k-$25k donors in a special hybrid direct marketing/individual giving program. -Serve as primary liaison to the external production team creating the ACLU?s new donor magazine. Ensure that the magazine reflects the ACLU?s high production standards. -Direct and supervise Annual Fund Officer. -Oversee the development of the Crystal Eastman Leadership Society (CELS), the ACLU?s mid-level donor recognition society, in order to present a clear and compelling rationale for increased giving. -Manage day-to-day relationships with all vendors for Special Gifts, Gift Planning (direct marketing related) and the ACLU magazine, including but not limited to direct response vendor, telemarketing vendors and printing/production vendors. -Play a key role in developing direct marketing messaging for Special Gifts and Gift Planning. -Implement and manage cross-departmental marketing calendar, with an emphasis on Special Gifts and Gifts Planning. -Create and provide regular program metrics to demonstrate program health. -Develop and manage project budgets. Conceptualize and implement reports to demonstrate actual performance against budget and cashflow. Ensure that expenses are in line with budget expectations and/or anticipate and make a business case for budget modifications. -Stay abreast of current direct response trends and ACLU issues and determine appropriate application to program and recommend changes/improvements where necessary. -Assist the Director of Special Gifts with overall strategy development for program and launching of new program initiatives. -Collaborate on other projects as assigned. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS -Bachelor?s degree required. -A minimum of 7 years of direct marketing experience, or comparable development experience, in a nonprofit setting. -Prior experience in high-touch direct marketing, fundraising and planned giving preferred. Will also consider candidates who demonstrate an ability to become quickly conversant in fundraising and planned giving and apply these skills in the direct marketing context. -Outstanding marketing skills as evidenced by a portfolio of successful projects. Knowledge of and proficiency in the technical and analytical aspects of managing a direct marketing campaign in online and offline environments. -Demonstrated leadership ability working with cross-departmental teams. -Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, mentor and inspire staff. -Budget management skills preferred. -Project management experience required, including demonstrated ability to identify and anticipate obstacles, respond accordingly, meet multiple deadlines, foster relationships and communicate effectively and efficiently with colleagues and external contacts, including vendors. -Self-starter with strong organizational skills, multi-tasking skills and attention to detail. -Skilled at common desktop software applications and database systems; experience with PIDI a plus. -Commitment to the mission of the ACLU.
