When Did the Right to Life Become the Right to Terrorize?

Operation Save America and Its "Summer of Justice"

Operation Save America, an anti-abortion extremist group headquartered in Waco, Texas hosted a “Summer of Justice” event (commemorating the Summer of Mercy), in Wichita, July 16-23, 2016. OSA planned rallies, protests, and “street activity with different teams.” According to the OSA website, leaders wanted “seven Word in Warfare teams at strategic locations in Wichita, two to four overpass teams, two display teams, two teams ministering at the local abortion mills, Planned Parenthood and South Wind, and campus/truth tour team.”

In spite of efforts to garner national media and large numbers of demonstrators, the “Summer of Justice” protests fell flat. Instead of turning out thousands, OSA managed to recruit less than 200 people to the protests in Wichita, and almost a fourth of those participating were children.

Even before the "Summer of Justice" began, the Feminist Majority Foundation launched a digital media campaign in the Wichita Eagle to inform residents of Wichita about the extremists going to their city. FMF then traveled to Wichita to help mobilize community members and ensure a law enforcement response that would safeguard patients and staff, while maintaining the right to access healthcare clinics.

The OSA week-long National Event commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the July, 1991 “Summer of Mercy” organized by Operation Rescue, which resulted in a more than six-week (46 days) siege targeting three abortion clinics and focusing on Dr. George Tiller’s clinic. Some 2700 anti-abortion protestors blocking the entrance to Tiller’s clinic were arrested over the six weeks. Tiller was shot in the arms five times by an anti-abortion extremist in 1993 and was murdered by an anti-abortion extremist in 2009.

Main Speakers at OSA 2016 “Summer of Justice” included:

Rusty Lee Thomas, Director, Operation Save America

In announcing the Summer of Mercy 2016, Rusty Thomas explained:

“OSA has some unfinished kingdom business in Wichita, Kansas. Tiller's mill was reopened. To the death industry that represents their shrine...”1

The following are recent statements Rusty Thomas, Director of Operation Save America, has made:

“When we are asked what the punishment should be for women who have illegal abortions, we should unashamedly respond – whatever the penalty is for murder in the state where it takes place.”2
— Rusty Thomas, posted to OSA website, April 2, 2016
“…God’s Word demands, ‘Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for food, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.’ Undoubtedly, God’s justice extends to the child in the womb.”3
— Rusty Thomas, posted to OSA website, April 5, 2016
“…we must treat abortion as murder and penalize it accordingly.”3
— Rusty Thomas, posted to OSA website, April 5, 2016
“The abortion mill in Wichita represents… a high place of child sacrifice. This high place needs to be plucked up, rooted out, overthrown, and vanquished from Wichita.”4
— Rusty Thomas, posted to OSA website, May 28, 2016

Matthew Trewhella, Director and founder, Missionaries to the Preborn, Milwaukee, WI

Trewhella is a member of the Justifiable Homicide Facebook group created in 2015, entitled Preborn Persons Deserve the Same Defense as Born Persons; the Facebook group describes itself as “real, non-pacifist, abortion abolition” and features a photo of Paul Hill as its banner with the text “Killed (and died) to Defend Preborn Babies.” (Hill was executed by the state of Florida in 2003 after being convicted of the murder of Dr. John Bayard Britton and his volunteer escort Ret. Lt. Col. James Barrett in 1994.) Trewhella is a signatory of the Justifiable Homicide/Defensive Action petition (advocating the murder of abortion providers).

Trewhella is the primary architect of and advocate for the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, aka “Defy the Tyrants” –and will speak about it at the event. Rusty Thomas sees the Doctrine as a paradigm shift for OSA. A militia-like argument for the defiance of the federal government and federal law concerning abortion and Roe V. Wade that encourages followers to find state and local elected officials, magistrates, judges, and law enforcement “who will disobey the Supreme Court decision outright and order an end to abortion.” We’re talking about defying it,” Thomas said.

In an April 1, 2016 article entitled, “Should Women be Punished for Murdering Their Own Son or Daughter,” Trewhella stated:

"When we are asked what the punishment should be for women who have illegal abortions, we should unashamedly respond – whatever the penalty is for murder in the state where it takes place.”5
“Of course, as Christians, we offer the good news of redemption through Christ to those guilty of abortion, just as we would any other criminal guilty of a capital crime. But that does not negate the God-given role of the civil magistrate to administer just punishment on behalf of society.”5
“To think otherwise about this matter is to give credence to the present matriarchal bloodlust in our nation.”5

In a 2005 Michigan newspaper article, Trewhella is quoted as stating,

“It is legitimate to use force or violence, to think otherwise is nonsense.”6
“When Paul Hill did it his way, John Britton didn’t kill no more babies.”6

Dave Daubenmire, OSA regional leader from Columbus, Ohio

Daubenmire is the Co-Founder and Director of Minutemen United, a Christian, militia-like group founded in 2002 to be, “…ready in a ‘minute’ to wage war against a culture of God-haters.”7
