Who is Troy Newman? What is Operation Rescue?

Troy Newman and Operation Rescue

Troy Newman is:

  • President of Operation Rescue, 1999 – present
  • Founding Board Member of Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and Advisor for the deceptive video campaign by CMP targeting Planned Parenthood and other women’s health care providers
  • President of Pro-Life Nation
  • Featured speaker and trainer at Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust

In addition to being a founding board member of Center for Medical Progress (CMP), Troy Newman served as board secretary of the group until as recently as late January 2016. According to press reports, Newman resigned from the CMP board after a grand jury in Houston, Texas investigating the claims made in the now debunked CMP videos found no wrongdoing on the part of Planned Parenthood, but instead indicted CMP director David Daleiden and his colleague Sandra Merritt on felony criminal charges related to their CMP activities. Daleiden and Merritt will no longer stand trial on those charges, after the Harris County prosecutor’s office agreed to drop the case, citing a procedural technicality.

Although Newman claims to be “non-violent,” he and Cheryl Sullenger, his second in command, said of Paul Hill, upon his execution for the murder of Dr. John Bayard Britton and his clinic escort, Ret. Lt. Colonel James Barrett:

“There are many examples of where taking the life in defense of innocent human beings is legally justified and permissible under the law.”1

Newman referred to Hill’s execution as the “murder of a political prisoner.”

Operation Rescue’s Senior Vice President, Cheryl Sullenger served two years in prison for conspiring to bomb an abortion clinic in San Diego. Her name and phone number were found on the dashboard of convicted murderer Scott Roeder’s car when he was arrested by police after killing Dr. George Tiller in his church.

Newman and Sullenger co-authored the book, Their Blood Cries Out, (Wichita, Restoration Press 2003) in which they said:

“...the United States government has abrogated its responsibility to properly deal with the blood guilty. This responsibility rightly involves executing convicted murderers, including abortionists, for their crimes in order to expunge blood guilt from the land and people.”

In 2015, Troy Newman was denied a visa to visit Australia after a member of Parliament wrote that she was concerned his visit could lead to "threats or the commission of acts of violence against women and medical professionals." (Source: Associated Press, October 2, 2015.)
