Just when herbal shop owner China Bayles is finally ready to make
a commitment to her live in lover, former police officer Mike McQuade,
he pulls away from her. On Valentine's Day, she expected a ring,
but received earrings instead. She overhears a telephone conversation
that leads her to believe that he is cheating on her. When she confronts
him, he stone walls her, being more interested in the case she is
investigating for the widow of a Texas Ranger.
China is unaware that Mike is hiding more than just an infidelity
from her. He is working undercover for the head of the Rangers.
Rather than brood, China dives into investigating the circumstances
that led to the death of her client's husband. She does not realize
that the path she travels leads deep into drug trafficking and police
corruption. It takes a tragedy for China to understand what her
priorities ought to be and what she needs to do to attain them.
LOVE LIES BLEEDING has a cross genre appeal that should widen
the author's already large fan base. The story line is fast paced
and absorbing, and the relationship between the two protagonists
filled with depth and complexity. Susan Wittig Albert demonstrates
her tremendous talent with this novel that should be her break out
into the big leagues. This book is one work that readers should
not miss.
