Senator Barbara Boxer joins members of Congress to challenge Ohio election results

On January 6, 2005, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) joined Representatives John Conyers (D-MI) and Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), as well as several other African-American members of the U.S. House, in objecting to the Ohio presidential election results as Congress certified the 2004 election.

Senator Boxer, in a historic and courageous move, stood with the House members so the Senate and House would be forced to discuss for two hours the election irregularities in Ohio, which disproportionately disenfranchised African-American and minority voters, women, and students.

TAKE ACTION - Thank Boxer for her courage and vision.

TAKE ACTION - Tell Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that you support Boxer, and urge them to take leadership roles in election reform.

Feminist Majority Foundation Election Analysis - Ohio 2004

On Wednesday, December 8, Representative John Conyers, Jr., and other members of Congress held the first congressional forum on election irregularities in Ohio.  Feminist Majority Foundation Eleanor Smeal testified, as did other leaders, lawyers, and citizens of Ohio.

Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, explained that in her analysis, voter purging in Ohio is inconsistent from county to county, but appeared to significantly affect Cuyahoga County (Cleveland area).  Because of purging of voters in 2001 and 2002 in Cuyahoga County, the massive voter registration effort in the county in 2003 and 2004 still resulted in a net loss in registered voters in 2004 compared to the 2000 election.

Here are Eleanor Smeal’s full comments and analysis of the presidential election in Ohio.
