September 8, 1995 - Colleen DermodyParliamentarians Say Yes to Beijing Commitments More than 500 women parliamentarians from 90 countries, gathered for the UN Fourth World Conference On Women, voted yesterday to work hard for women's equality.
The parliamentarians committed themselves to take action inpolitical, social and economic arenas, as they said "yes" to the Beijing Declaration, including "finding the necessary resources to carry out the measures being adopted here in Beijing."
The International Parliamentary Union (IPU) women members adopted the Declaration saying it was at the top of their agenda to be "gender-sensitive and liberal" in their votes back home on budgetary issues concerning equality.
The IPU also released the results of a study they conducted on women in power over the last 50 years. Study results found that on average, women make up 11.3% of the 40,000 national legislators, and the only 23 countries have more than 20% women in their parliaments or national governments.
