Feminist Majority Foundation's Recommendations to the President's Interagency Council on Women: Health and Women's Reproductive Health

PRIORITY: WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

The Platform for Action states:
Para. 106 (e)
"Provide more accessible, available and affordable primary health care services of high quality, including sexual and reproductive health care ..."

Status:

Millions of girls and women do not have access to and/or education about efficient and low-cost birth control and abortion. Because of abortion restrictions, many are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. While violence at abortion clinics has declined over the past year, physicians, clinic staff, and women patients at a significant proportion of clinics continue to face death threats, stalking, and other severe forms of harassment and violence.

A recent FDA hearing resulted in the recommendation by the Committee on Reproductive Health Drugs to the FDA to approve mifepristone (formerly RU 486) as a method of early medical abortion for the U.S. market.

Actions

  • The FDA should expeditiously approve mifepristone. National Institutes of Health should expand funding and research on mifepristone and other anti-progestins as contraceptives and possible treatments for a variety of diseases and conditions including endometriosis, meningioma, Cushing's Syndrome and progestin-dependent breast cancers.
  • Congress must reauthorize Title X to expand family planning services to all women and provide Medicaid funding for abortions for low-income women.
  • The Department of Justice must continue to vigorously enforce the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act and to investigate connections between incidents and perpetrators of anti-abortion violence. The U.S. Marshal Service must be used when necessary to protect targeted clinics and clinic personnel.
