Introduction to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women

HALF THE WORLD, HALF THE POWER

The United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women and NGO Forum took place in Beijing, China, in September 1995. With 36,000 women in attendance, this conference was the largest ever -- five times the number of participants attending the first World Conference on Women held in 1975 in Mexico City. Some 8,000 women from the United States attended the 1995 Conference and Forum, including a ten-person Feminist Majority Foundation delegation.

This event produced a Global Platform for Action for raising the status of women and provided an unprecedented opportunity to forge alliances among thousands of NGOs and government delegates from every region of the world.

The Platform For Action approved at the conference resulted in major gains for women, described in a final wrap-up report from the Feminist Majority Delegation.

In preparation for the conference the Feminist Majority Foundation also prepared a Summary of UN and US Platforms for Action for Women, 1975 - 1995, chronicling the evolution of the platforms in the areas of equality/human rights, economic equity, development, health, violence against women/peace, education, and feminization of power.

The final approved 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women Platform for Action and other US-implemented initiatives are featured on the The President's Interagency Council on Women Web site. The Feminist Majority Foundation, along with other women's rights, peace, and development organizations have made recommendations for implementation.
