A Day in the Life ...

Ever wonder what interns do all day? Read on to experience what it's like to work at the FMF with the interns of Spring 2005

Spring Interns: (back row) Liz Best, Katie Richardson, Dana Malone, Jessica Walker, (front row) Rachel Volinsky, Stephanie Hengst, Juliana Zuccaro
Blog Editor: Dana Malone, FMF intern Spring 2005

Tuesday, February 1 - After spending some time getting to know the staff of FMF and learning our way around the office, it's time to start spreading the word about our upcoming National Collegiate Global Women's and Human Rights Conference in April. Liz, Rachel, and I went to several DC campuses to put up flyers and talk with professors about the conference. The conference will aim to expose the interconnectedness of issues including sweatshops, poverty, and reproductive rights.

Thursday, February 3 - As the debate continues over President Bush's plan to overhaul Social Security, Juliana, Katie, Liz, and I went to a Democratic rally on its merits. We made signs like “Privatization Hurts Women!” and “Save Social Security for Women!” Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA, House Minority Leader,) Charles B. Rangel (D-NY,) and Sander M. Levin (D-MI) spoke out to save the current system. There were tons of pictures snapped pictures at all of the assorted groups and people who came out in the cold to say that Roosevelt's system should not be abolished.

Tuesday, February 8 - Katie, Stephanie and I attended the National Council of Women's Organizations' press conference on Social Security at the National Press Club. It was exciting to see what goes on on the other side of the camera. Women from many different backgrounds shared stories about how Social Security has had a positive effect on their lives.

Wednesday, February 16 - Liz, Rachel, and I attended a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on President Bush's budget. I had never realized that the general public had access to such events. Not only did we see a whole bunch of senators- Boxer (D-CA,) Obama (D-IL,) Feingold (D-WI,) Biden (D-DE,) just to name a few- but Condeleeza Rice was witness! Senator Boxer gave the articulate Ms. Rice a bit of a hard time. It was amazing to see these two powerful women going head to head.

Wednesday, March 2 - Stephanie and I attended an education conference today, “Missing the Mark: Girls' Education and the Way Forward.” Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) was a keynote speaker. We were so excited to hear this powerful woman's words. We also recieved a lot of information on the efforts to better girls' education worldwide.

Thursday, March 10 - Today, Dr. Beth Jordan, FMF's Medical Director, talked with the interns about abortion and FMF's Mifepristone campaign. It was an informative talk about a topic so many people shout opinions on, yet so few entirely understand. .

Tuesday, March 15 - Some of the interns and the Campus Organizers attended a rally as Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) reintroduced the Equal Rights Amendment today. FMF's president, Eleanor Smeal, a leader of the effort to pass the ERA from 1972-1982, spoke out in favor. We brought signs and handed out "This is What a FEMINIST Looks Like" stickers. It was great to see so many people out in favor of women's rights.

Wednesday, March 16 - With the National Collegiate Global Women's and Human Rights Conference quickly approaching, the interns had a meeting with Campus Organizers Candice and Lauren to discuss responsibilities for the conference. So far, we have over 240 people registered! Lauren assigned all of the interns to different states for outreach to try and increase our numbers. "From now until the conference," she says, "you will eat, sleep and breathe your state."

FMF fighting to Never Go Back at the Supreme Court

Wednesday, April 6 - This week, Jessie and Nisha, the West Coast Campus Organizers are in town to help out with the conference! A whole bunch of us attended a rally to save the filibuster at the steps of the Supreme Court today. Senators Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Jack Reed (D-RI) spoke as Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) came out to show their support
Friday, April 8 - Today was the Feminist Leadership Institute (FLI,) the first leg of our big conference. The FLI focused on educating student leaders on ways in start and maintain their feminist student groups. We held workshops covering topics such as the politics of language and clothing, how to strengthen your student group, the importance of funding feminism, how to navigate campus media, and the history of the feminist movement. I was so impressed by the many groups attending!

Katie and staff member Anname spread the news about Ms. Magazine

Me, Stephanie, Katie, and Internship Coordinator Sara

Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10 - This weekend, FMF held The National Collegiate Global Women's and Human Rights Conference. Not only was it interesting to see everything we had worked so hard to plan come together, but it was a great success! Attendees were representative of the nation, arriving from as close as Washington , D.C. to as far away as California , Oregon and Texas . Over 400 people attended the conference, representing nearly one hundred college campuses across the United States and coming from 36 different states! Hauwa Ibrahim, a Nigerian Civil Rights Attorney, was particularly inspirational, receiving a standing ovation from the hundreds of students attending. “You are the future, you are our hope,” she told us.

Monday, April 11 - Today, some of the groups stayed in town for our Congressional Visit Day. We gave students information packets to bring to their respective representatives. One of the groups stopped in on a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing and spoke of how excited they were to see Senator John Kerry (D-MA) in action. I was so happy to see how pleased they were to experience DC with us!

Staff and students with FMF President Eleanor Smeal

Interns and staff with Senator Lautenberg

Thursday, April 14 - Today, the interns and some staff attended a rally to support the new Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act (ALPhA) legislation. We held our signs high, representing FMF. Afterward, I was able to talk with my senator, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), who even agreed to take a picture with us!
Tuesday, April 19 - It's Equal Pay Day! Stephanie and I joined the Campus Organizers for an equal pay rally on The Hill. Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY,) and Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) introduced The Paycheck Fairness Act and The Fair Pay Act. Equal pay has been the law since 1963, but even now, more than 40 years later, women are paid 24 cents less for every dollar a man earns.

Senator Clinton speaks out to end wage discrimination.

Thursday, April 21 - Campus Organizers Candice and Lauren, and interns Rachel, Stephanie and I attended a rally at Georgetown University Law School to save the filibuster. Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL,) Joseph Lieberman (D-CT,) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) all spoke out to preserve our system of checks and balances. "Our Constitution is more important than any presidential power," asserted Sen. Durbin.
