National Internship Program in
Feminism & Public Policy
Tiffany Jones, Fall 1998
University of Colorado at Boulder
Spending
the fall semester of my Senior year interning with the Feminist
Majority turned out to be one of the most educational experiences
I have had in my four years of college. Not only did I learn
first-hand the inner-workings of a major feminist non-profit
organization, but I also had the opportunity to work with a group
of diverse interns and staff that taught me much more than I
could have learned from just being a feminist activist on my
own campus, the University of Colorado at Boulder.
We tackled issues broad in scope, including working
to legalize RU 486 in the United States, campaigning to end gender
apartheid in Afghanistan, and protecting clinics nationwide from
violence.
I was hired as an Internet Intern which meant
much of my time was allocated to writing the Feminist Online
News and assisting the Internet Coordinator in improving the
already award-winning Feminist Majority Web site. The Feminist
News is published daily and is the most popular page on our Web
site.
During my time here I have attended a press conference
featuring major feminist leaders such as Patricia Ireland, Betty
Freidan, and the Feminist Majority's President Eleanor Smeal,
as well as a press conference given by the Prime Minister of
Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif. Both were located at the National Press
Club. The interns have also attended Human Rights watch meetings,
Pro-choice leader meetings at National NARAL, conferences at
the State Department, and a reception at the Seward-Bellmont
House.
To anyone looking to gain a national as well
as international perspective of women's issues, meet great people,
work with inspirational leaders, and live in an exciting city,
I definitely recommend interning with the Feminist Majority in
Washington D.C.
