Unsafe, Illegal Abortion Leading Cause of Gynecological Emergencies in Kenya
A new study conducted in Kenya found that complications from unsafe, illegal abortions accounted for 43 percent of all gynecological emergency hospital admissions. The study, published in the East African Medical Journal, looked at 400 patients admitted to the Provincial General Hospital Kakamega in Kenya with reproductive health emergencies. Researchers from the University of Nairobi found that complications from unsafe, illegal abortions was the leading reason women are admitted to the hospital with gynecological emergencies. Another recent study at the Kenyatta National Hospital found that unsafe abortions accounted for 60 percent of gynecological emergencies, with 53 percent of those treated for abortion complications girls under 14 years old, according to The East African in Nairobi. At the Nyahururu District Hospital in central Kenya, up to 87 percent of all gynecological emergencies are as a result of unsafe, illegal abortions.
