South Dakota Abortion Ban May Return on the 2008 Ballot

Anti-abortion extremist groups are in the preliminary stages of getting an abortion ban initiative on the 2008 South Dakota ballot. An email from the group 40 Days for Life noted a 95 percent vote among anti-choice leaders to pursue another ballot initiative, reports the Argus Leader.

The Secretary of States website currently lists a proposal to circulate petitions on an Initiated Measure to regulate the performance of certain abortions, to reinstate the prohibition against certain acts causing the termination of the life of an unborn human being and to prescribe a penalty therefore."

South Dakota voters rejected an abortion ban on the 2006 ballot, overturning the abortion ban passed in the state legislature earlier that year. The ballot initiative to override passed 56 percent to 44 percent, following massive efforts by pro-reproductive rights groups, including the Feminist Majority Foundation.
