Unintended Pregnancy Legislation Introduced

House Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Tim Ryan (D-OH) introduced a bill yesterday that would increase the accessibility of reproductive health care for women. The "Preventing Unintended Pregnancies, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act" would provide funding to minimize unintended pregnancies and support parents. The legislation supports increased access to contraception and comprehensive sex education.

"A woman facing an unintended pregnancy needs the opportunity to make the best decision for her circumstances, whether her decision is raising the child, adoption, or abortion," said ACLU Legislative Counsel Vania Leveille. "We urge Congress to not only pass this legislation, but also to ensure that a woman who needs to end a pregnancy has access to the care she needs."

The bill has received support from a range of moderate and liberal groups whose shared goal is to reduce the number of abortions, reports the Washington Post. According to US News & World Report the Obama administration has yet to make a public statement regarding the pending legislation.
