Women Participate in Bahrain Elections for First Time
Thirty-four women are registered as candidates in the May municipal elections in Bahrain, the first time women will appear on the ballot. Only 320 candidates are running for office, making women 10 percent of the contestants. Elections will be held May 9. These will also be the first elections in Bahrain in which women will be allowed to vote. The last democratic elections in Bahrain were in 1973, according to the Associated Press. Over 200,000 citizens and foreigners who own property in Bahrain are allowed to vote. Bahrain is home to half a million people.
