Steinem Wants Clinton Censured, Not Impeached

Gloria Steinem stated in an interview this past weekend that she does not want Clinton to resign, but she does want him censured for lying about his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinski.

"If he resigns, the right-wing will have succeeded," said Steinem, a leading feminist and founder of Ms. Magazine.

Steinem went on to say, "Clinton should be censured for lying under oath about Lewinsky in the Paula Jones deposition, perhaps also for stupidity in answering at all."

The President has drawn disappointment, but also strong support from the feminist community. Last week, main national womens organizations announced a unified campaign to oppose impeachment of the President. Subsequently, other womens organizations including NARAL and the National Partnership for Women and Families have come out against impeachment.

Steinem stated she felt feminists spoke for the majority of Americans in saying the Clinton-Lewinsky affair was no one's business if there was "no coercion, harassment, or violence."

"When Monica testified, she was very clear that she wanted and initiated this relationship," Steinem said. "We have to listen to what women say."

Impeachment hearings on the President are scheduled to begin next week.
