Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal signs the Declaration of Sentiments.

A national conference of women's leaders, "Forum '98", convened this July in celebration of the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, which was the U.S.' first public, organized demand for women's rights. On the 150th of anniversary of that historic meeting, women's rights leaders drafted a blueprint for the future of feminist movement, communicating a shared vision for women's equality in the 21st century.

National participants in Forum '98 included Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority Foundation. See a full list of participants.

At its conclusion, Forum '98 participants issued a Declaration of Sentiments. In addition, the National Organization for Women issued a Declaration of Sentiments at their national conference, which was held at the beginning of the Seneca Falls festivities in Rochester, NY.

Both Forum '98 and the NOW Declaration of Sentiments endorsed the National Women's Equality Act, a document drafted by the Feminist Majority Foundation. It was created for the National Council of Women's Organizations, a bipartisan network of organizations representing over 6 million women. The Women's Equality Act was drafted after extensive input from Nancy Zirkin of American Association for University Women; Heidi Hartmann, Ph.D. of the Institute for Women's Policy Research; Martha Burk, Ph.D. of the Center for Advancement of Public Policy; Susan Bianchi-Sand of the National Committee on Pay Equity; Gail Shaffer of the Business and Professional Women USA; National Organization for Women; Anita Perez Ferguson of the National Women's Political Caucus; NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund; Black Women's Agenda; Professor Ronnie J. Steinberg of Vanderbilt University; coalition of Labor Union Women; Clearinghouse on Women's Issues; Organization of Chinese American Women; Women's Action for New Direction; National Women's Conference; Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press; National Women's Party; Alexandria Commission for Women; Jewish Women's Coalition; and National Association for Women in Education.
