    Association of Community Organizing for Reform Now-ACORN
    Site presents facts and information on the current debate on minimum wage, welfare reform, Medicaid, and the issue of race and income as factors on insurance and banking. Newsletter can be requested by email.

    Brookings Institution
    Several good articles: basic overview of the Clinton and GOP budget debates; simple understanding for process, policy, and politics involved; how much is spent on Nuclear weapons.

    California Budget Project
    A comprehensive look at the California budget and the decisions that face the governor, voters, and legislators. Offers a long list of budget briefs which are easy to read and search including information on the flat tax, block grants, immigration rates.

    Campaign For New Priorities/Common Agenda
    Public policy group focuses on reinvesting in American institutions retreating from excessive Cold War military spending. Currently updating and improving their site to be reintroduced this summer.

    Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
    Several reports on labor, minimum wage, hunger, state policies (taxes, safety net, fiscal spending) can be purchased for an annual fee of $45.

    Center for Law and Social Policy
    CLASP is a national non-profit organization with expertise in both law and policy affecting the poor seeking to improve the economic conditions of low-income families with children and secure access for the poor to our civil justice system through education, policy research and advocacy. Find documents on child support, state welfare waivers and laws relating to work issues.

    Children's Defense Fund
    Several opportunities to take action and express your concerns to the powers-that-be. Offers a link to Congress home page. Alerts visitor to new CDF projects. Clear and interesting charts that inform the visitor to the costs of raising children; facts on children broken down by race-shocking statistics on crime, health and poverty.

    Congressional Black Caucus Budget
    The CBC annuals creates an alternative budget, focusing on issues pertaining to African -Americans and the impoverished, as well as an increase in financial assistance to Africa. Lengthy but thorough; lays out actual spending.

    Council for a Livable World
    An extensive site that covers a wide range aspects of military spending. Best part of this site is a number of interesting and long public opinion polls. They endorse candidates for 96' elections who have proven to be earth-and-people-friendly. Voting records of each member of Congress and their background. Current legislation is summarized and gives the visitor several opportunities to contact policy makers.

    Democratic Policy Committee Report by Tom Daschle
    Background briefing about the Clinton/GOP budget. Partisan site educates visitors on the effects of the GOP budget on seniors, students, women and the poor.

    Department of Education
    Information on student loans and the Department's budget.

    Dollars and Sense
    Offering perspectives on current budget issues, this magazine explains the workings of the U.S. and international economies and provides left perspectives on economic affairs. Includes text of some articles from current and back issues.

    Electronic Policy Network
    Large link to other progressive sites. Covers welfare, economic, and health policy issues.

    Environmental Defense Fund
    Extensive site that has a small amount of budget or governmental spending information on topics relating to environmental damage, programs, and initiatives.

    Institute for Women's Policy Research
    Main issues covered are welfare, labor, health care, and employment with lists of other resources. Site offers forums to stimulate debate and research.

    Military Spending Working Group
    Over 40 different sites compose this page dealing with arms control and weapons spending. Includes interesting reading on Cold War spending limits, as well as an assessment of current defense spending. Sponsors the Peace Dividend Resolution, Campaign to Stop Star Wars.

    National Committee for Economic Conversion and Disarmament
    Provides information about the effects conversion has on jobs and communities. Visitor can access NCECD's full publications, which are published quarterly. The publications are complete, easy to read, and include graphics and charts. Contains interesting studies that provide viable solutions.

    National Priorities Project
    This nonprofit research and educational group examines Federal budget priorities and their impacts on local communities and also advocates reordering those priorities to better respond to human and social needs. The site focuses on making the local impacts Federal budget priorities easy to understand by generous use of graphical materials including charts and graphs.

    National Resources Defense Committee
    Lists numerous publications and ways to access them. Environmental budget information.

    National Urban League
    This Civil Rights Organization has initiated programs and studies that focus on the needs of poor urban minorities and is currently expanding and improving the site.

    Peace Action
    Updates its Washington report bi-weekly with resolution focusing on arms control. Offers a list of state chapters, and an opportunity to get involved in grass-roots organizing and information campaigns.

    PIRGS-Public Interest Research Groups
    Extensive site covers several budget issues: student loans, consumer rights, and environmental cuts. Lists the large number of national and local programs. Contact information for local groups and national policy makers provided.

    Progressive Policy Institute
    Associated with the Democratic Party, site contains information on current budget issues. Includes talking points.

    Thomas Legislation Information
    Daily listing of bills and their status/background.

    Urban Institute
    The site offers some background on their studies primarily concerning low-wage workers. Visitors can order the complete report through the site. Also find a State Database of the Urban Institute's Assessing the New Federalism project including information on income security, health, child well-being, demographic, fiscal and political conditions, and social services in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

    Women's Environment and Development Organization - WEDO
    Concerned with United Nations and International Development. The Gopher Site contains past newsletters and speeches.
