Empowering Women in Medicine
How Does Your Medical School Compare?
Medical schools are at the forefront of the increasing wave of medical women. Currently, over 36% of all medical students are women. School by school, that number varies from 53.6% at the Medical College of Pennsylvania to a dismal 17% at the University of Utah. The percentage of women first-year students in the 1989-90 school year ranged from a high of 57% at Rush Medical College in Chicago to a low of 20.2% in Utah.
These numbers, however, are deceptive. While the number of women students is increasing, it is growing in an arena with no power, no authority to implement policy, and no venue to speak out effectively for change. In essence, these women are virtually invisible in the field of medicine, and their presence as medical students is no guarantee that women will become visible in the higher ranks.
But even at the medical student ranks women are far from equal. Note, for example, that of the 127 medical schools operating today, equal numbers of women are present in only four student bodies. There is still much progress to be made.
