IN WOMEN'S RIGHTS COUNT

*CONGRESSIONAL ACTION*

  1. Call or write to your members of Congress and tell them "No Retreat on Affirmative Action!" Affirmative action has benefited every woman and minority in America, as well as every white man who depends on the salary of a woman family member.
  2. Express your outrage at the Republican welfare reform bill which punishes poor women and children. Poor women need a strong safety net to help them get back on their feet, as well as high-quality job training, subsidized child care, and health insurance when they go back to work. In addition, we need to eliminate the wage gap that impoverishes women.
  3. Tell your members of Congress to oppose the Republican seven-year budget resolution, which hurts women by slashing money from social programs while increasing the defense budget and giving tax breaks to the rich.

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE!

August 26, 1995 is the 75th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment which guarantees women the right to vote. Many cities including Washington, DC and Los Angeles are planning marches or celebrations. Be sure to participate and take young people with you! This milestone in United States history is often not adequately taught in schools. If you would like more information about teaching women's history in schools, see our Teach Women's History! kit on page 16, along with other women's history books. Or call the National Women's History Project at (707) 838-6000.
