R4C HISTORY
The Feminist Majority and Feminist Majority Foundation were founded in 1987
by National Feminist Leader Eleanor Smeal. Their purpose is to promote both
an uncompromising feminist agenda and women's empowerment.
WHY THE NAME FEMINIST MAJORITY
Feminists are frequently brushed aside as a fringe movement or special
interest group. Yet in a 1987 Newsweek/Gallup poll, 71% of all women believed
the women's movement has improved their lives. 56% of all women said they
considered themselves feminists, and only 4% considered themselves
anti-feminist. A 1987 Times-Mirror study found 51% of both women and men
identified themselves as feminists (the question asked of women) or
supporters of the women's movement (the question asked of men). In public
opinion poll after poll, feminists and/or the women's movement have majority
support.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEMINIST MAJORITY
AND FEMINIST MAJORITY FOUNDATION
The Feminist Majority is the advocacy arm, working for equal representation
for women in public office and advocating passage of laws to secure women's
equal rights, including access to abortion and birth control without
compromising on young women's and poor women's rights. The Feminist Majority
has been the leading organization nationwide working to stop dang-erous
parental consent laws and to restore Medicaid funding of abortion. The
Feminist Majority is also working for tough new federal laws to protect
clin-ics and healthcare workers against attacks by fanatical anti-abortion
groups.
The Feminist Majority Foundation led the largest national campaign to secure
RU 486, the French abortion pill,
for use by women in the U.S. More than 500,000 petitions were collected and
delivered France and Germany where the manufacturer of RU 486 is headquartered.
The Foundation, the education arm, produced and distributes two award-winning
videos on abortion, and coordinates the National
Clinic Defense Project, the largest of its kind.
