What you are now reading is the R4C BASIC INFO GUIDE. This booklet was designed by Jennifer Finch of L7 as a "Cliff Notes" style reference source to answer any questions you may have regarding ROCK FOR CHOICE or its organizers, the FEMINIST MAJORITY & FEMINIST MAJORITY FOUNDATION.
We hope you will find this booklet not just useful but....MOTIVATING!
1. Present opportunities for activism in the fight for abortion rights.
ROCK FOR CHOICE HAS TWO GOALS
2. Raise money for the Feminist Majority and Feminist Majority Foundation. These much needed proceeds are used for Clinic Defense, the Campaign to End Abortion Clinic Violence, and the Becky Bell/Rosie Jimenez Project.
Back in the 80s and early 90s, it started to occur to some folks that our basic human freedoms, including the right to a safe and legal abortion, were slowly and systematically being outlawed by our very conservative government. Four of these people were the Los Angeles-based band, L7. What concerned them even more than the dwindling right to choose, was that most of America's youth hardly seemed to take notice. It occurred to L7 that young people needed to be made aware of this situation and given a course of action. WHY R4C NEEDED TO EXIST
L7 decided a benefit concert would be a good start and sought out like-minded individuals and organizations. A journalist friend, Sue Cummings, suggested The Feminist Majority as an organization to look into. A few days later they met.. The Feminist Majority turned out to be an exceptionally kick-ass organization but, like most other pro-choice groups, they had no fundraising division that could deal with rock concerts. L7 figured if they wanted to get their dream show going they would have to organize it themselves and donate the proceeds to the Feminist Majority. The first show, with NIRVANA in Oct. '91, was a success. It became clear that concerts of this kind could provide a much needed information network while providing the Feminist Majority with some well-deserved income to replace the resources they put out to combat anti-abortion groups. HOW R4C STARTED
Because L7 became such busy gals they had to step back from the promotion side of things. They and others helped the Feminist Majority to develop R.4.C. as a full-time, in-house project in hopes that the rock community will continue to combat anti-abortion fanatics. HOW R4C WORKS NOW
