Becky Bell was a victim of PL-106, an Indiana law requiring women under 18 to tell their parents before having an abortion. Unwilling to disappoint her parents, Becky had an illegal abortion and died at 17 from massive infections. Over 36 states have passed parental consent and notification laws. Rosie Jimenez a single mother with a five-year old daughter, was the first victim of the Hyde Amendment which blocks federal funding for abortions for poor women. Too poor to afford a private clinic, Rosie died in agony from a botched illegal abortion. All but 10 states have cut off poor women's funding as well.
The effect of these restrictive laws and regulations is to make abortion inaccessible to millions of young and poor women in the U.S., offering them only one grim alternative to pregnancy: illegal abortion. The Feminist Majority leads the fight to remove restrictions on young and poor women's access to abortion.
