Medical Abortion

On September 28, 2000, the FDA approved Mifepristone for use in the United States after a 12-year campaign waged by the Feminist Majority Foundation. Already, anti-choice activists are mobilizing to prevent women from accessing Mifepristone.

In states like Florida, for example, both public and private universities say they will not make Mifepristone available at campus health clinics. Increasing numbers of universities across the country are following suit. The FDA requires that any facility prescribing mifepristone be able to make arrangements for surgical back-up referral in the few instances when the drug fails to complete an abortion. Many college health centers meet those requirements but are nonetheless rejecting Mifepristone because it offers a form of abortion.

Mifepristone also has implications for the treatment of fibroid tumors, ovarian cancer, endemetriosis, meningioma, and some types of breast cancer.
