President Clinton discusses the Taliban's human rights abuse against women and girls with FM leaders (from Clinton's right) President Eleanor Smeal, Board Chair Peg Yorkin, Board Member Lorraine Sheinberg, National Coortinator Katherine Spillar, Director of Policy and Research Jennifer Jackman, and Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan Chair Mavis Leno.
Feminist Majority leaders meet with President Bill Clinton in the Oval Office to discuss the Taliban's human rights abuses against women and girls in Afghanistan. President Clinton voices a strong commitment to restoring human rights in Afghanistan. The Feminist Majority presents to President Clinton a 10-point plan of action which he could take to help end gender apartheid in Afghanistan, including continued opposition to recognition of the Taliban and immediate steps to admit more Afghan women and girls to the U.S. as refugees.

The Feminist Majority continues to advocate for the ratification of the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), single-handedly held back by Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC), Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee. On October 27, nine Congresswomen walk into a Foreign Relations Committee meeting and attempt to present Helms with a letter signed by over 100 House members in support of CEDAW. Helms calls in the Capitol Police to escort the Congresswomen out, telling them to "act like ladies." The Feminist Majority's post-card campaign and online e-mail action target Helms, and argue for the ratification of this important treaty.
