Task Force on Women and Girls in Sports

Women are still discriminated against in athletics. Because athletics are so important for women and girls -- to build health, self-esteem, and leadership skills -- the Feminist Majority Foundation started its Task Force on Women and Girls in Sports in May, 1993.

The Task Force is chaired by Molly Yard, former president of the National Organization for Women. The Task Force is comprised of leaders in the field of women's athletics who are at the forefront of expanding opportunities for women and girls in athletics: women like Donna Lopiano, Executive Director of the Women's Sports Foundation; Dr. Christine Grant, Director of Athletics at the University of Iowa; and Mariah Burton Nelson, former pro basketball player and author of two books on women in sports.

The Task Force has produced an easy-to-read, acclaimed report, Empowering Women in Sports. In addition, members of the Task Force are leading the fight against Congressional attacks on Title IX, the federal law that prohibits discrimination against women in federally-funded education, including athletics.
